Abstract:

In an attempt to prevent cervical cancer, were instituted various preventive measures, among which, the Pap smear examination which fulfills the function of early detection of cancer cells or their precursors. Therefore, the objective was to investigate the discourse on the knowledge, feelings and expectations of women regarding Pap exam. This is an exploratory qualitative approach, conducted with ten users of a Unit Integrated Family Health, the city of João Pessoa - PB. Data collection took place in April 2011, through recorded interviews. We identified eight core ideas: prevention of disease; search on their own, search for stimulation of another person; sense of shame and embarrassment, pain sensation, feeling of satisfaction; conversations during the examination and exchange of knowledge about women‘s health. Based on the reports, there are many difficulties to be overcome to provide better adherence of women to the Pap smear.
