Abstract:

In small towns, which are generally located in more isolated geographic areas, combined with situations of greater social and economic vulnerability, the shortage of doctors is a constant problem. The aim of this study was to identify the participation and the characteristics of the small towns of the Northern Paraná which joined to the More Doctors Program for Brazil. This is a quantitative study conducted in 82 towns that used primary and secondary data. The results revealed that there were few towns that had some accession criteria (6.1%), but this did not represent an impediment to the other towns accede to the program (75.6%). The towns with smaller human development indices, with a population of more than five thousand, some accession criteria and that were further away (of the main town of the region or of the closest medium/large towns) were the most joined the More Doctors Program for Brazil. The More Doctors Program for Brazil significantly reduced the unequal distribution of doctors in Brazil. However, the sustainability of the policy must be linked to facing other challenges that still persist in the Unified Health System.
