Abstract:

The Cerrado (savanna) has been marked by damage caused by agribusiness, a land concentration model, which occupies large areas and uses large amounts of pesticides. With the aim of analyzing socio-environmental vulnerabilities and health damage caused by the use of pesticides, an action research was carried out in six Brazilian states, based on participatory mapping. The participants were ribeirinhos, brejeiros, assentados, quilombolas, camponeses and geraizeiros peoples from six states in the Cerrado biome. The set of qualitative materials was analyzed using the Collective Subject Discourse technique, where the discourses highlighted the risks of biodiversity loss and the establishment of a scenario of food and nutritional insecurity, in addition to acute and chronic poisoning due to exposure to pesticides. On the other hand, agroecological practices emerge as elements that protect the environment and health, in defense of the territory and ways of life. It is clear that the damage resulting from agribusiness is experienced disproportionately, determined by structural inequalities. In these, those responsible for the damage to health and the environment concentrate the wealth generated from the environmental and social collapse that deeply affects the Cerrado.
