Abstract:

The form of remuneration of health professionals may have implications in how they perform their activities. Fixed remuneration can be performed by means of salary, fee-for-service or capitation. In addition to fixed remuneration, pay for performance is becoming very common. In this article we present the experiences of Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Lisbon-Portugal. Managers in these three examples have felt the need for a monetary reward for achieving certain goals. Indicators analyze structure, process and results and evaluate individual professionals and also health teams. In Lisbon, the payment may represent up to 40 % of basic salary while in Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro goes up to 10%. Despite the growing use of this management tool in Brazil and worldwide, more studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of these initiatives.
