Abstract:

The support offered by social networks is fundamental for the social inclusion of people with mental health problems. This study aims at identifying and analyzing the difficulties and the possibilities of users of a Psychosocial Care Center (CAPS) in building their extended social network. The qualitative approach was used as the research methodology and Ágnes Heller’s concept about everyday was used as a philosophical reference. The subjects in this investigation were people with mental health problems that are users of a Psychosocial Care Center and people from their social network. For the data gathering semi-structured interviews were done and discourse analysis was used for examining the data. It was identified that although this population is living in the community frequently they are shunned, isolated from living together with other people; occurring the process of social exclusion. However, CAPS is a space of belonging and welcoming that undeniably produces favorable changes in the users’ lifes. People with mental health problems also have been able to relate to others; using the available opportunities, they make new friends and maintain friendships they already had. The living with others in the community is exactly what favours the formation of relationships.
