Abstract:

The present paper has the purpose of analyzing the perceptions of the multiprofesional team on the implementation of palliative care in the adult intensive care unit. An exploratory-descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, performed with 14 health professionals from a public teaching hospital. The information was collected between February and April 2012, by means of semi-structured interviews and non-participatory observations, interpreted using content analysis. Three thematic categories were identified: nurse care for terminal patient in a UCI fostering physical comfort; Lack of preparation of the team on dealing with a terminal patient; and Challenges of palliative care practice in an intensive care environment. The interviewed parties related to having partial knowledge of the proposal for palliative care and in nursing care divergences are observed in the therapeutic conducts of the team, demonstrating a lack of interaction and communication among the professionals. The preparation of a national policy is necessary to endorse nurse care for critical terminal patients, permanent/continued education of professionals and the creations of nurse care protocols for promoting the comfort of the patient during the final phase of life and for the patient’s family.
