Abstract:

Introduction: The influence of periodontal inflammatory processes on the occurrence of low birthweight. However, there is still no general agreement about the topic.
Aim: To systematically analyze the relationship between maternal periodontitis and low birthweight.
Methods: The search for the studies was made until April 2019. The studies included cohort and case-control studies that estimated the association between periodontitis and low birth weight, with no limit to the language or date of publication. Two reviewers independently performed article ion, data extraction, and methodological quality assessment. The analysis of heterogeneity of the studies, subgroup analyzes and meta-analyzes with random effects model were performed. The measures of summary association were estimated using the Gross and Adjusted Odds Ratio, with respective 95% confidence intervals. Visual inspection of graphs was used to assess publication bias.
Results: A total of 21 articles were identified, of which 21 were ed for the meta-analysis. The final model indicates that periodontitis in pregnant women was associated with low birthweight (ORbruta = 2,13 IC95%= 1,60 – 2,83; I2= 80,0% e ORajustada = 2,64; IC95%= 2,04 – 3,42; I2= 17,4%).
Conclusion: Pregnant women with periodontitis may have more than twice the chance of having low birth weight babies.
