Abstract:

Our main objective is to study the association between socio economic status (SES) and subjective wellbeing in children and adolescents.
Data was collected in 16 Portuguese schools. 1181 young people responded to the questionnaires, 51.5% were female, ages ranged between 8 and 17 years and the girl’s average age is 9.8 years (SD = 1.32) and boy’s average age is 10.0 (SD = 1.53). 27, 1% have high SES, 64, 2% have medium/low SES and 8, 7% are unemployed.
Three adequate regression models were built. Model 1 establishes association between been SES and subjective wellbeing. This association became not significant with the effect of personal and social factors, which were strongly associated with subjective wellbeing.
It appears that the impact of SES in subjective well-being is mitigated by the presence of social and personal factors. The promotion of personal and social skills seems to be an effective way to prevent the negative effects of low SES in child and adolescent development.
