Abstract:

Pharmacist prescribing is an expanding experience in some developed countries, with different health systems. Knowing the contribution that this activity can have in the health care process, and investigating its acceptance, is of fundamental interest for the countries it is regulated. This literature review study, therefore, aimed to draw the state of the art of the academic research on perceptions, opinions and attitudes in the context of the pharmacist prescribing practice in countries it was adopted. Accordingly, an investigation was carried out in the Medline, Scopus, Embase, SciELO and Lilacs databases, resulting in the ion of 17 studies. From the analysis of the articles, three categories of discussion emerged: “understanding the practice and perceived benefits”; “acceptance and adherence to the practice”; “barriers to the practice”. The results showed diverse acceptance and perceptions in different audiences, depending, among other issues, on the level of knowledge and experience of patients and health professionals, the profile of the pharmacist or the type of prescription. This study points out some challenges involved in the practice of pharmacist prescribing and its findings can be useful to suggest ways to strengthen the practice.
