Abstract:

This article deals with the differences between body actual posture and awareness among old people suffering, or not, from postural alterations. To ascertain whether self-evaluation of posture by the elder coincides with real posture, as well as his elaborations on the subject include preventive measures to counter such possibly misleading perception. Method 18 cases among the aged population already participating in the “epidoso study” at UNIFESP. Initially, a postural evaluation was done. Postures were photographed, printed on paper and offered to participants. The ensuing spontaneous narratives were taped, and eventually used during the semi-structured interviewing process, thus helping to discuss individual awareness of postural problems. Results a passive attitude was identified in the Elder, due to alterations during the aging process, besides a warped body image, as perceived by those who show a postural deviation. Among those who did not present any postural alterations, both a sharper consciousness of column warping, and a more careful positional alignment, having begun earlier than the aging process, was detected. Conclusion postural awareness begins before the aging process settles in, therefore any preventive-corrective measures must be taken at this stage, and not afterwards, when aging has already settled down, postural issues being already definitively establishe
