Abstract:

The study aimed at verifying the adherence to preventive measures among older adults with increased predisposing to severe forms of COVID-19 and its association and interaction with social support. It is a cross-sectional study based on a sample of 3,477 participants of the telephone surveythe Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-COVID-19 initiative), who reported going outside the house in the past week. The adherence was based on the frequency of going outside the house, the necessity of going outside the house, the use of masks, and cleaning hands. Statistical analysis was based on the Poisson model with robust variance. Predisposing factors for severe forms of COVID-19 included age ≥65 years, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Social support included the living arrangement and social connectedness during the pandemic. Nearly 46% of the participants showed higher adherence, which was positively associated with the number of predisposing factors for severe forms. Social support was neither associated with nor modified this association after adjustments. We concluded that higher adherence is concentrated among older adults with increased predisposing to severe forms of COVID-19, independently of social support. However, all should do preventive measures. It is necessary to guide and support the population.
