Abstract:

Objective: To describe preferences for behaviors conducive to physical activity (PA) and to evaluate the influence of these preferences on physical activity of children from Pelotas, RS.
Methods: Cross-sectional study with 4 to 11 years-old children. Behaviors conducive to PA were evaluated by Netherlands Physical Activity Questionnaire (NPAQ). Time spent in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was measured by accelerometry. Analysis of variance and linear regression was performed to evaluate associations between questions from NPAQ and independent variables and between each behavior and time spent in MVPA, respectively.
Results: Children in the highest economic group liked to draw more (p=0.01) and preferred less vigorous games (p=0.004) and play outside (p=0.008) than poorer children. Older children were less extroverted (p=0.008) and liked to draw less than younger children (p=0.009). To like of sports, dislike drawing and like to play outside were statistically associated to daily time spent in MVPA.
Conclusions: Some studied characteristics were associated to behaviors conducive to PA, and economic status showed the most important influence. Preferences as like of sports influenced positively the time spent in MVPA
