Abstract:

This study aims to estimate the prevalence of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE); to investigate their co-occurrence profile and its distribution according to individual, family, socioeconomic and school characteristics of adolescentspublic and private schools in an Administrative Region of Rio de Janeiro. This is a cross-sectional study with 681 individuals, ed through complex random sampling. ACE were identified through the QUESI questionnaire and direct questions. Prevalence and correlation between ACE pairs and their co-occurrence profile were estimated. The results revealed that emotional abuse and neglect and the dissolution of the biparental family were the most common adversities. Seventy percent of the sample suffered at least one ACE and 9.0% four or more. About 20.0% experienced abuse and neglect and 9.0% experienced co-occurrence of abuse, neglect and absence of at least one parent during childhood. The most vulnerable subgroups were girls, children of teenage mothers, those who did not live with both parents, public school children, and low-income parents. The high prevalence and the co-occurrence profile of adversity suggest that policies aimed at prevention and victim reception are wide-ranging and multisectoral.
