Abstract:

Cross - sectional study performed in a violent area, aiming at identifying the prevalence of familiar violence perpetrated by caregivers against dependent elderly people and associated factors. A convenience sample of 135 pairs was evaluated with instruments applied at the caregiver (social support, alcoholism, burden and violence) and at the elders (depression, cognition and functional capacity). Statistical tests were used to compare the percentages of violence according to characteristics of the caregiver and the elders; a logistic regression model investigated the association between violence and the characteristics of both. Over 30% of the caregivers showed signs of elder abuse. The presence of high levels of burden and alcohol problems increased by 11 and 3.8 times the risk of violence against theelders, respectively, when compared to the reference groups. Elderly men and individuals with depression had 2.9 and 6.9 times greater chance of being mistreated, in relation to women and the ones without depression, respectively. Conclusion: The high prevalence of violence by caregivers, especially those with high levels of burden, alcohol-related problems and caring for depressed elders, demands family support strategies to reduce domestic violence.
