Objective: To estimate the prevalence and the profile of social demographic and health of homebound elderly registered at Family Health Unit in urban region of Belo Horizonte, MG. Methods: It was carried out a household survey between May and July 2006 with 275 elders select via cluster sampling, considering as a Primary Sampling Unit the micro-areas covered by the Health Unit. The homebound elderly included those who reported being unable to get out home alone. It was used the svy suite of commands in STATA 9.0 to deal properly with the cluster sample structure and to allow the incorporation of fractions of expansion in the analyses. Results: Among the 275 elders, 22,4% (IC95%: 14,7; 32,4) were restricted to their homes. The prevalence of this condition was greater among women, people had a 80 years or more and suspect of cognitive impairment (p-valor smaller 0,05). The greatest part of homebound people had income lower the minimum wage, reported history of fall, suspect of depression and indicated physical disorders as the cause of the restriction. Conclusions: The large contingent of homebound elderly, of low-income and with several health problems, reinforces the need for incorporation of proposals for elderly health promotion and vigilance which extend beyond the borders of the health units.Key words: homebound elderly, household survey, Family Health Program.
