Abstract:

This study aimed to identify the prevalence of oral self-examination among elderly and see if this prevalence was higher among users of dental services provided by the Unified Health System (SUS) than among users of other services. Cross-sectional study conducted from complex probability cluster sampling among the elderly (65-74 years), a large Brazilian city population size. Binary logistic regression was performed, the estimates were adjusted for the effect of design and weights, we used the SPSS. Among the evaluated 740, met the inclusion criteria 492 elderly, 101 (22.4) referred to the practice of oral self-examination. This practice was higher among elderly assisted dental services provided in SUS, with the highest per-capita income, higher education, which used removable prosthodontics and among those who had no impact resulting from oral disorders; was lower among those who used dental services for routine and those who didn‘t own elitist habit. The prevalence of oral self-examination among seniors was low and higher among elderly assisted dental services provided in SUS. The stimulus for accession to this self-care must be considered in existing elderly health policies especially among those assisted in private services, supplementary and philanthropic organizations.
