Abstract:

Purpose: to describe the risk and protective factors for non-communicable diseases with data from the telephone survey in 2010.
Methods: telephone interviews in probabilistic sample of adults living in Brazilian state capitals and Federal District covered by landline telephones. The prevalence of these factors were stratified by sex, age and level of education.
Results: High prevalence of soft drink consumption (28.1%), fat meat consumption (34.2%), and alcohol abuse (18.0%) and low fruits and vegetables intake (18%) and leisure time physical activity (15%) was verified. Approximately half of population was overweight and reported no practice of sun protection. Physical inactivity and smoking reached almost 15% of adults. In general, risk factors were more prevalent in men, subjects with lower education level and young adults.
Conclusion: The results pointed out different health behaviors according to sex, age and level of education in Brazil. This variability should be considered in health promotion actions.
