Abstract:

This article evaluated the prevalence and factors associated with sexual risk behavior (SRB) among adolescent students in Brazil. This is a cross-sectional study with datathe National School Health Survey, 2019, with a representative sample of Brazilian school adolescents in the 9th grade of elementary school. Sociodemographic, behavioral, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and sociability characteristics, guidance received at school and body self-image were evaluated. SRB was characterized as not using a condom in the last sexual intercourse. Data were analyzed using a hierarchical model with robust Poisson regression. The prevalence of SRB was 40.3%, with a lower proportion in the North region (37.4%). There was a higher prevalence of SRB among female adolescents, whose first sexual intercourse occurred at the age of 13 or younger, who were victims of sexual violence, who practiced bullying and who used illicit drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Those who used a condom at first sexual intercourse had a lower prevalence of SRB. The high prevalence of SRB among adolescent students in Brazil, combined with the knowledge of its associated factors, should lead to the establishment of strategies to favor the improvement in the sexual and reproductive health of these young people.
