Abstract:

OBJECTIVE: Estimate the prevalence of sarcopenia components and association with socioeconomic variables in older adults in a rural population of Ceará. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with 274 older adults. Muscle mass was determined by the Muscle Mass Index (MMI) by electrical bioimpedance and by calf circumference; muscle strength (MS) through the handgrip test; and physical performance by the walk (WV) and Timed-up-and-go tests. Probable sarcopenia was characterized by decreased MS, sarcopenia when associated with decreased MMI, and severe sarcopenia when these two were accompanied by low WV. The associations between sociodemographic conditions and lifestyle and the components of sarcopenia (MMI, WV and MS) were estimated. RESULTS: The prevalence of probable sarcopenia was 20.4%, and of sarcopenia was 2.6%. In the logistic regression, a higher frequency was observed: i) in males, aged >69 years, and in those who do not work, among the older adults with decreased MS; ii) aged >69 years, in those who do not live with a spouse, and in those who do not practice physical activity at an adequate level, among the older adults with reduced MMI; iii) aged >69 years, among those who have lived in rural areas for less than 30 years, and among those who do not work, among the older adults with reduced WV. CONCLUSION: The prevalence and factors associated with sarcopenia were identified.
