Abstract:

The objective is to know the prevalence and identify the variables related to tobacco abstinence in patients treated on smoker therapeutic support groups (GATT) in primary health care of the city council of Vitória-ES in the year of 2009. Cross-sectional study with 160 participants of GATT who participated in 75% of the sessions. Conducted telephone interview, 9 to 20 months after treatment and used secondary data of route of the initial interview. In statistical analysis were used Chi-square and Fischer test. The statistical significance was 5%. Abstinents were 28.7%, relapsed 51.9% and 19.4% have not stopped smoking. There was a statistical difference between the groups in the marital status variables (0.039) previous attempts to stop smoking (0.029) amount of cigarettes smoked per day (0.019) use of medicines (0.001) and anxiety/mood disorder reported (0.040). The abstaining group had more married, tried several times to stop smoking, smoked fewer cigarettes/day, showed less anxiety/mood change. The abstinence was similar to other studies and the largest percentage of subjects relapsed.
