Abstract:

Antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide problem that risks population’s health. Objectives: To identify and evaluate strategies for prevention and control of antimicrobial resistance, as well as barriers to their implementation in Primary Health Care (PHC) services. Methods: We developed an evidence brief for policy. Evidence searches were carried out between November/December 2018, in 13 databases. A deliberative dialogue was held to validate the results and to list barriers and promoters to strategies implementation. Results: 13 included systematic reviews presented results that interventions with focus on education, use of electronic systems and biomarkers, showed reduction in antimicrobial consumption and prescription. Regardin implementing strategies main obstacle is related to user/cargiver’s expectation to receive antibiotic prescriptions, while education actions involving health professionals was a promoter. Conclusions: Rational use of medications in the PHC services is important to prevent antimicrobial resistance to antibiotics. Effective interventions that were identified in this study can be implemented alone or combined, according to local context.
