Abstract:

Dentistry shows itself, now-a-day, open to new ideas about the meanings for oral health. This openness to a new vision for oral health responds to the social production of health and shows the need to contextualize the social, historical and diverse knowledge in the development of oral health for various communities. We aim, with this research, to build meanings for oral health with a group of elderly. Toward this perspective for a current looking at oral health construction we propose an approach, looking at possible relationships between, the elderly discourses about oral health and the social constructionist discourse. Thus, we interviewed 14 elderly enrolled in a Family Health Unity in Ribeirão Preto/SP, at the first semester of 2010, and identify two interpretative repertoires through Discourse Analysis, which showed the relationship between 1-Childhood with lack of information and dental assistance, and 1-Primary Health Care building the meaning of oral health. We concluded that Social Constructionism works epistemologically for the construction of meanings for oral health and that primary health is essential for recovery and health care for the construction of meaning in oral health by older people that create conditions for care and healthy attitude.
