Objective: Analyze the apprehension of mothers/responsible for infants supplemented with ferrous sulphate, by adherence to supplementation, about anemia and its consequences. Methods: It was carried out a study of population in a prospective, qualitative and quantitative approach. No anemic and no supplemented children were selected to get prophylactic supplementation with ferrous sulphate by 6 months. After six months, there was adherence to supplementation. Among the 133 children initially eligible for the study (non-anemic, not previously receiving supplementation), 97 returned for the second evaluation. Of these, 4 had anemia during the follow up and began treatment and 3 others were brought in by individuals who were unable to provide information on the use of the supplement. Thus, 90 pairs of children/responsible were assessed and interviews were held. Content analysis was employed for the analysis of the reports, as described by Bardin (1977) and using as reference for the discourse analysis.
Results: High adherence was showed by 56.7% of children, low adherence by 20% and 23% had supplementation interrupted. It was due to lack of orientation and support from health service, mainly. It was not reported a preventive attitude by 20.5% of mothers/responsible for children with low adherence and 5.9% of those with high adherence. A few mothers/responsible knew ferrous sulphate was used to prevent anemia.
Conclusion: Mothers/responsible of the two groups (high and low adherence) showed little knowledge about anemia, its prevention and health consequences of the child. Is need of more information regarding anemia, a follow up routine by professionals and evaluation of perception by individuals involved with iron supplementation.
