Abstract:

This cross-sectional study aimed to describe the prevalence and factors associated with choice of rice and beans (CRB) among diners in a restaurant serving buffet-by-weight. Data on anthropometric, socio-demographic and behavioural characteristics as well as weight and photographic record of the dishes chosen by the diner were collected. The representative sample consisted of 675 diners for lunch, aged 16-81 years. It was analyzed a subsample of 396 diners, consisted of two groups: CRB and not CRB. Chi-square test verified the representativeness of the subsample in relation to the total sample. The Wald test, chi-square test and Poisson regression with robust variance examined associations between CRB and the data collected. Rice and beans were not chosen by 38.4% of diners. After adjusting for the other variables, the absence of CRB on the plate was directly associated with overweight/obesity (RR=1.43; 95%CI 1.10-1.84), women (1.57; 1.20-2.05), meal not similar to usual (1.34; 1.02-1.75), choice of pastries (1.37; 1.06-1.76) and cold side dishes (1.39; 1.08-1.78) and was inversely associated with plate of larger weight (0.54; 0.38-0.77). It is concluded that the CRB can still be considered usual by the Brazilians and more frequent among men. While not choosing them seems to be associated with eating habits less healthy and increased risk of overweight/obesity.
