Abstract:

Objectives: to identify and map the actions to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding that are carried out within the prison system. Methods: scoping review, whose searches were carried out in the Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature databases and in the nursing databases, Virtual Health Library, Medical Literature, Analysis, and Retrieval System Online, through PubMed, Scientific Electronic Library Online and on the Capes Periodicals Portal. Results: 465 studies were obtained, of which 177 duplicates were removed and 175 by title exclusion, 56 articles were eliminated by the abstract and eight articles were not found. After selection and reading by the review team, 16 articles were removed, thus constituting 10 articles with relevant results for the promotion of breastfeeding in the prison space, 13 articles with important results for the protection of breastfeeding in the prison space and 10 articles with potential findings to support breastfeeding in prison. Final Considerations: it is necessary to promote breastfeeding in prison with actions of promotion, protection and support, as many children are still prevented from being breastfed soon after birth, which characterizes inequality in relation to the population in freedom.
