Abstract:

The paper analyses the mental health network of the city of Rio de Janeiro, aiming to make an assessment on the current situation of the Psychiatric Reform implementation and point advances, limitations and challenges. It was performed a documental research through official documents, ordinances, SUS databases and information available on the Mental Health Department of the Municipal District of Rio de Janeiro and specialized literature review in national and international scientific papers. The results point to important advances in the deinstitutionalization of care, with substantial reduction of psychiatric beds and increased community services. However, remain significant challenges: increasing coverage of community mental health centers, implementation of psychiatric beds in general hospitals, the integration of mental health with primary care, deinstitutionalization of long-stay patients, expansion of residential facilities and increasing the provision of specific services for people on the harmful use of alcohol and other drugs.
