Abstract:

Abstract
The paper seeks to demonstrate to which extent alternative ways in the work process of Nuclear Medicine professionals with Iodine-131 can assist in managing risks from ionizing radiation. The design is based on the main theoretical concepts of Psychodynamics of Work in relation with Workers Health. In the case study, from semi-structured individual interviews and non-systematic direct observation, data were raised from 15 workers of a public health institution, in Rio de Janeiro city. In data analysis was used the Bardin’s content analysis method. When comparing the results obtained with standard prescribed models, it was found that the respondents have changed the requirements. They developed individual defense mechanisms, such as denial of risk, and collective defensive strategies, leading them to face the greatest danger as a defense. It was evident the defensive role of profession’s ideologies. Otherwise, the know-how of prudence proved effective in minimizing the risks of radiation exposure. The authors discuss the limits of security management functions that do not consider the subjectivity and the workers knowledge.
