Abstract:

Abortion is a serious health problem in Brazil and its complications can be prevented by proper and timely care. The article evaluates the quality of care of women admitted for abortion in hospitals operated by the Sistema Único de Saúde, in Salvador, Recife and São Luis, with reference to Ministry of Health norms and user satisfaction. The article analyses a survey of 2976 women treated for abortion complications in 19 hospitals, between August and December 2010. Four dimensions were defined leading to criteria and indicators: receptiveness and guidance; technical quality of care; inputs /physical environment; and continuity of care. There was a closer fit to the norms with respect to receptiveness and guidance. Social support and the right to information was poorly rated in all cities. The technical quality of care was rated poor. With respect to inputs and physical environment, cleaning was the least well evaluated. Continuity of care presented the most critical situation in all three cities, with a lack of scheduled follow-up appointments, little information about care available after hospital discharge, risk of new pregnancy or family planning. Abortion care is far from that advocated in Brazilian technical guidelines and by international agencies.
