Abstract:

The aim of this study was to translate the Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ8-10), related to quality of life and oral health, into Portuguese language and to make necessary cultural adaptations for use in the Brazilian children population. The instrument underwent the following steps: two translations for Portuguese language (Brazilian), back-translation, committee review and pre-test. For cross-cultural adaptation, in each question the alternative “I didn’t understand” was added. The questionnaire was applied to 20 children recruited from Public Schools of Piracicaba. The two initial translations were similar, but for the back-translation some questions were mixed or it was chosen a question from one version, or it was decided for another alternative. After the committee revision, in some questions there were word substitutions by respective synonymous for better understanding by the people to be evaluate. The incompatible terms for the cultural context of the analyzed population were substituted. In the pre-test the Brazilian version of CPQ8-10 was very well understood by the studied population. The Portuguese version of the CPQ8-10 proved to be easily understandable for the Brazilian children population.
