Abstract:

The aim of the study was to evaluate the quality of life of women treated surgically for breast cancer at the Reference State Hospital Oncology of São Luís-MA. The quality of life was assessed using the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-Breast (FACT-B). The variables were expressed as mean and standard deviation, and statistical analysis consisted of ANOVA or Kruskal Wallis test and Student t test or Mann-Whitney. The level of significance was α ≤ 5%. The statistical package used was Stata 9.0 and BioEstat 5.0. Participants were 197 women with mean age of 53.0 ± 11.7 years. The mean values of the FACT-B showed tendency to good quality of life, and the emotional domain the most committed and Sub-scale cancer the most favorable. The type of surgery performed influenced the Social Domain, Emotional and Sub-scale cancer questionnaire. The non-conservative surgery showed worst levels of quality of life. There was statistically significant relationship between duration of surgery and the Physical, Emotional and Functional domains as well as between duration of surgery and the scores of the FACT-B. The adjuvant treatment influenced all domains of FACT-B. Concludes that quality of life found was relatively good, but was negatively impacted by non-conservative surgery the shortest time since the surgery and adjuvant therapies.
