Deaths due to violence are a public health issue owing to the magnitude of their impact in society and in health services. A study of the descriptive temporal trend was carried out using Deaths due to violence are a public health issue owing to the magnitude of their impact in society and in health services. A study of the descriptive temporal trend was carried out using the official national mortality information systems due to violence in Argentina and Brazil for the period 1990-2010. Indicators were created to evaluate information quality by sex, age, and cause of death. The results demonstrate a trend of improvement in the quality of the information systems. This trend also appears when we analyze deaths due to violence in particular, with a decrease in the number of records for death due to violence with undetermined intent; as well as the high percentage of deaths due to firearms with undetermined intent in Argentina. The analysis of the quality of information systems regarding mortality due to violence allows for the detection of problems and the orientation for actions in order to obtain information of better quality. This would therefore permit improvement in the orientation of preventive public policies. Keywords: violence, external causes, information systems, mortality, trends
