Abstract:

Assess the food intake is a challenge to researchers, given the complexity involved. Among the different methods used to assess food intake in epidemiologic studies, there is the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). The objective of this paper was to identify studies about FFQ developed and/or validated in Brazil, analyzing the methods used for such purposes and the principal results about validation. The following databases were searched: PubMed, LILACS and SciELO. Were included studies published till 2013 about developed and/or validated of FFQ in Brazilian population. These studies were characterized and analyzed according to: i) the main methodological characteristics about elaboration and validation process of the questionnaires e ii) the key results related to validation. It was revised 41 studies: six about FFQ developed, 18 about FFQ developed and validated, 17 about FFQ validated. There were inter-regional differences in the publications, as well methodological differences in the elaboration and validation of the FFQ. Adults and adolescents were groups more covered in FFQ validated, while specifics studies for children < 5 years of age were not found. The methodological rigor and statistical results guarantees the suitability of validated FFQ for their target populations, with highs correlation for energy, carbohydrate, fibers, calcium and vitamin C.
