Abstract:

This work is a conceptual theoretical study to think about disability and some basic concepts that are managed for the characterization of it. The paper aims to broaden perspectives on disability removing it from a description that reduce it to the disease condition. Therefore, we situated the Disability Studies historically presenting the Medical and Social Models of Disability and problematize the concepts of autonomy and normality. These concepts and their related - independence, functionality, normal – are used as a tacit foundation to differentiate some bodily changes that are identified as different lifestyles from others that are often called deficiencies. We conclude stating that disability can be analyzed from other reading keys that do not put it as a synonym of disease if we consider the notions of interdependence, normativity and self criation as basic concepts to describe it.
