Abstract:

Recurrent falls lead to high risk of morbidity and mortality in older people, especially among institutionalized individuals, due to their frailty status and functional decline. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence and risk factors related to recurrent falls in institutionalized older people. This is a longitudinal cohort study during a one-year period. Older residents10 nursing homes who were able to walk and preserved cognitive capacity were assessed. Occurrence of falls in the last twelve months was asked and, recurrent falls were considered when the individual suffered two or more falls during this period. Besides, institution-related variables as well as sociodemographic and health conditions were collected through questionnaires. Among a total of 364 older people, 130 were included. The incidence of recurrent falls was 26.9% (95% CI = 22.4 - 31.5). Through the chi-square and logistic regression, considering a 5% significance level, fatigue was identified as a risk factor (p = 0.001; RR = 2.9) and beta-blockers as a protective factor (p = 0.010; RR = 0.1). It can be concluded that recurrent falls are common in nursing homes and fatigue represents a risk factor.
