Abstract:

This article intends to discuss the evolution of health inequalities and access to health services in brazilian regions, based on household surveys conducted1998 to 2013. Social inequalities were analyzed for reasons of extreme years of schooling, considering two age groups (18 to 59 years and 60 years or more). In health conditions, in both age groups, there is a worse evaluation of health status and an increase in the prevalence of diabetes and hypertension, which may be related to the expansion of basic care. Regarding medical consultations in the last year, there is generally greater access, with the maintenance of small inequalities. The greater use of dental consultations among those with lower levels of education leads to a reduction in inequalities, which are still significant. Hospital admissions throughout the series are higher among the less educated, and there is a reduction in rates in the two age groups, in almost all regions. An increase in mammography by less educated women was observed, with a decrease in inequality. The results corroborate the need for the continuity of household surveys to monitor regional and social inequalities in access to the health system.
