Abstract:

Advances in reducing poverty and inequalities in the years 2000 had paradoxical effect on Brazilian territory. The article aims to examine how socioeconomic transformations, and complexity of health services are expressed in the regions established for planning purposes and intergovenamental managementof the Unified Health System. For that, we tried to identify and explain differentiations in the compositions of the 438 existing health regions and their spatial distribution, comparing situations observed in 2016, with those found in 2000. Factor analysis and techniques of groupings were used for the construction of a typology in the two years of the series, based on a diverse set of secondary data sources. It was verified evolution of income levels and offer of services between health regions, with significant improvement in socio-economic conditions of the population. The results suggest a positive impact of the combination of strategies related to social, economic and regional policy for the promotion of development generating well-being more widespread in the territory. However, limitations of policies implemented for the universalization of the health system.
