Abstract:

The objective was to identify the relationship between Common Mental Disorder (CMD) and food consumption among undergraduate studentshealth courses. We interviewed 432 students, regularly enrolled in one of the health courses at a public university in the city of Fortaleza - CE, between April and December 2018. The Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20) was used for CMD screening. Food consumption was assessed using the 24-hour recall and, for the assessment of physical activity, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), short version, was used. We used linear regression models to assess the relationship between energy intake and nutrients and positive tracking for CMD. The models were adjusted for age, gender and physical activity. The prevalence of CMD was 44.5%, being higher in women (53.3 vs. 28.7%, p-value: < 0.001). Individuals with positive CMD screening had lower frequency of physical activity and higher mean intake of added sugar, saturated fat and lower mean fiber intake, regardless of age, gender and physical activity. The present study demonstrated high prevalence of CMD among undergraduate studentshealth courses, and its association with higher intake of added sugar and saturated fat and lower intake of fiber.
