Abstract:

Objective: To correlate the gingival condition and sociodemographic status of adolescents living in a Brazilian region economically disadvantaged. Methodology: The survey was conducted with a random sample of 450 adolescentes in 13 cities selected in Jequitinhonha Valley (MG). The gingival condition was evaluated by a calibrated examiner (Kappa ≥ 0.85). The oral exam was based in Community Periodontal Index (CPI). Were calculated the frequencies of individuals and sextants. Was employed the Multiple Correspondence Analysis (ANACOR) to explore the relationship between CPI and sociodemographic characteristics. Results: 16 (3.6%) were healthy, 235 (52.2%) gingival bleeding, 36 (8.0%) dental calculus and 163 (36.2%) with bleeding and calculus. The ANACOR identified two groups guarding similarities between them in relation to periodontal disease. The group one, CPI healthy, 19 years old, who work and have higher family income. In the group two, CPI with gingival bleeding, 15 and 16 years old of age, of both sexes, in elementary school, lower family income and declared themselves as mixed or black skin color. Conclusion: The presence of gingivitis (bleeding on probing) was related to socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of adolescents in the region.
