1194/2009 - Relationship between the climate changes and determinant factors of the mortality among elderly people in the São Carlos district (SP, Brazil) within a period of ten years.

The aim of this study was to identify the existing correlations among the number of death of elderly people and the climate changes in the district of São Carlos (SP) within a period of 10 years (1997-2006). It has been collected information about death records through DATASUS, of people aged 60 years or over, dead between 1997 and 2006 in São Carlos district. The average monthly data of max and min temperatures and relative humidity of air in São Carlos district were provided by the National Institute of Meteorology. The coefficient of mortality of district, by gender and age has been calculated and data were analyzed with t test, one-way ANOVA, Bonferroni test and Pearson correlation coefficient test. 8.304 deaths which predominantly occurred among people aged 80 years or over, male and diseases of the circulatory system were the main cause of death. There was a positive correlation between mortality by infectious disease and minimum humidity, and negative correlation between mortality by infectious diseases and minimum temperatures, between mortality caused by respiratory disease and minimum humidity, between mortality caused by endocrine disease and minimum and maximum temperature. Thereby, it was possible to conclude that there was correlation between the climate and mortality of elderly people in São Carlos.KEY WORDS: Climate changes, elderly, mortality
