Abstract:

Objective: To analyze the association between the breastfeeding type in the first semester of life and the vitamin A and iron consumptionthe 6th to the 12th month.
Methodology: A cohort study with 226 children. The breastfeeding type was evaluatedthe 1st to the 6th month of life and the food consumptionthe 6th to 12th month. The nutrient intake between the groups was compared by the Kruskal-Wallis test. The association analysis between nutrient intake and breastfeeding type was held by the Poisson regression.
Results: Consumption below the recommendation for vitamin A and iron was 33.6% and 67.7%, respectively. Exclusively and predominant breastfed children in the 1st and 2nd month had higher vitamin A intakethe 6th to 12th month of life. Breastfed infants in the 6th month had higher vitamin A intake and lower iron intake in the bivariate analysis. The mixed and artificial breastfed group in the 1st month and the non-breastfed group in the 6th month had the vitamin A intake below the recommended levelthe 6th to 12th month of life.
Conclusion: The results reinforce the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life, contributing to higher intake of vitamin A. Iron intake was lower among breastfed children, however, the bioavailability of this nutrient is higher in breast milk.
