Abstract:

The study aimed to estimate the relationship of personal and environmental factors with the prevalence of acquired physical disability in Brazilian adults and elderlies. A cross-sectional study was carried out using datathe National Health Survey (NHS-Brazil), in 2013. The response variable was the self-report of acquired physical disability. The explanatory variables of interest were sex, race / color, education, social class, paid work, health plan, use of piped water and sewage network. The magnitudes of the associations and their respective 95% confidence intervals were estimated using Poisson Regression. Mutual adjustment was made for the variables that remained statistically associated in the bivariate analysis with a significance level below 5%. From 55,369 participants, self-reported acquired physical disability was found in 1.25% of the population. After complete adjustment, being female, of the non-white race / skin-color, with lower education levels, living alone, not having paid work, health insurance, running water and sewage were associated with higher prevalence of acquired physical disability. These findings show that the most vulnerable population has a higher prevalence of physical disabilities and that personal and environmental factors are important to be assessed both at the individual and population levels.
