Abstract:

Indigenous people’s health in Brazil is grounded on specific policies. The use of alcohol has been regarded as a health issue among indigenous peoples. In this article, we describe the representations attributed by health professionals in relation to the use of alcohol among indigenous peoples, and how these influence the care practices. It is a descriptive study based on interviews, as well as on participant observation, by means of ethnographic ion. Analysis and interpretation were made with the support of Software Atlas TI 8.0. The use of alcohol is seen as problematic by professionals, and the excessive consumption is reproduced in specific contexts. The ways of drinking vary according to both ethnics, religion and locality, thus resulting in the description of the need of developing cultural competences that provide support to the execution of effective actions, which also consider the collective construction as referred in the policies. A network of supporters is described; among them are the leaderships, traditional healers and the evangelical church. The study shows the difficulties to both the effectuations of policies and implementation of actions which correspond to the indigenous peoples’ expectations, in acknowledgement of the cultural and social logic related to the use of alcohol.
