Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate risk and protection factors to the development of 1 year old children assisted at family health care units. Methods: Cross-sectional study on 65 children aged at approximately 1 old year and assisted at two Family Health care units and their respective mothers. The development was evaluated by a developmental screening test (Denver II). The mothers were interviewed and answered the SRQ-20 to identify common mental disorder (CMD) indicators. After data collected, both descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were performed. Results: It was observed that global development was at risk in 43.1% of the evaluated children, and the most affected areas were language (24.6%) and fine motor development (20.0%); 44.6% of mothers scored for indicative of common mental disorders when the child was 1 year old. In bivariate analysis, reported depression, smoking, infections in pregnancy, CMD after birth and working outside were significantly associated with children’s development. After all statistical analysis, CMD showed to be a risk factor, and working outside a protection factor. Conclusion: In order to increase the chances of success of programs targeted for children at users of health care units and risk of impaired development, it´s important to focus on two aspects: children’s stimulation and maternal mental health.
