Abstract:

Introduction: This study aims to identify the risk factors associated with the development of post-COVID-19 syndrome in patients discharged from hospitalizations due to severe acute respiratory syndrome. Methodology: A systematic review of observational studies published between 2020 and 2023 was carried out in six databases. The relative risk values of each factor investigated were evaluated in the meta-analysis using the random-effects model. Results: 1,010 publications were identified, with 45 studies included in the qualitative analysis and seven studies in the meta-analysis. These studies evaluated the association between post-COVID-19 syndrome and factors such as the severity and number of symptoms of the disease in the acute phase, sex, and previous comorbidities. The results showed that female gender (RR 1.52; 95% CI 1.26-1.85), the presence of hypertension (RR 1.25; 95% CI 1.06-1.49) and a longer hospital stay (RR 1.01; 95% CI 1.01-1.03) were associated with the development of the syndrome. Conclusion: Female patients discharged from hospital due to COVID-19, with longer hospital stays and hypertension should be monitored to identify the development of post-COVID-19 syndrome, enabling timely interventions.
