Abstract:

The main objective of this study was to identify risk factors for neonatal death within a certain region of the countryside of São Paulo State. The methodology chosen was therefore a case-control study. The groups in this study consisted of 162 infants deaths that happened in 2009 in the region of the 6th Regional Health Office of São Paulo. The control group consisted of 324 children selected from the database of the Live Birth Information System, who shared the same birth date and city of residence. In order to identify the factors associated with neonatal death, an analysis of univariate logistic regression and hierarchical multiple regression was performed by estimating the gross odds ratios, adjusted for potential confounders, as well as the respective 95% confidence intervals. Results: Neonatal death chances were higher in cases when the mother had history of infant death (OR = 24.97 , CI = 12.20 to 51.10), had no more than three prenatal visits (OR = 11.40, CI = 5, 92 to 21.93), and were less than 28 weeks of gestational age (OR = 168.00 , CI = 49.63 to 568.66). The influence of birth weight was observed only among children who weighed less than 1500g. Conclusions: This study has independently identified five risk factors for neonatal death with particular reference to maternal history of previous infant death, a factor that has not been properly valued in previous studi
