Based on social representations theoretical framework, a qualitative inquiry was conducted to understand oral heath social representations in pregnant mothers living in an urban environment. Twenty-eighth pregnant adult women were interviewed, all of them attending a prenatal program at a health institution in the city of Medellín, Colombia. Interviews were recorded and transcribed; analysis was performed through open, axial and selective coding, according to grounded theory. Findings showed that although pregnant mothers doesn’t’ care so much about child’s mouth during prenatal life and early childhood, its importance increases along with growth and development process acquiring a preeminent role in social life, besides chewing and feeding aspects. Analysis revealed how coexist in mothers belonging an urban settlement social representations anchored in tradition, with new visions recreating both health professional discourses as well as mass media influences. Those include close relationship within oral heath and teeth, health linked to healthy practices as well as health services utilization and oral health as a social vantage, related to esthetic aspects.
