Abstract:

The study aimed to evaluate the association between the school food environment and patterns of eating behavior with the consumption of in natura and minimally processed foods (AIMP) by adolescentspublic and private schools. 499 adolescents9th grade of elementary school participated. A self-administered questionnaire with demographic and socio-economic aspects, consumption of AIMP in the previous day and of school meals, purchase of AIMP in the canteen and the surroundings and individual eating behaviors (number of meals, eating in the presence of screens and eating in company) was used. Principal Component Analysis was carried out to identify patterns of behavior. Poisson Regression models assessed the association between patterns of behavior and the purchase and consumption of AIMP in school environment with the consumption of 5 or more AIMP. Only 35.6% consumed 5 or more AIMP in the previous day. The prevalence was higher in studentspublic schools with a healthy pattern of behavior (PR: 1.48; 95% CI: 1.01-2.21) and who consume school meals more than 3 times a week (PR: 3.42; 95% CI: 1.41-8.28). Those who buy AIMP in the school surroundings also had a higher prevalence. The findings reinforce the importance of public policies that promote healthy eating in adolescence.
