Abstract:

This study aimed to determine self-perceived health in institutionalized elderly, as well as determine the prevalence of negative self-perceived health and associated factors. A cross-sectional study is presented herein, conducted in 10 nursing homes (NH) in the city of Natal, between October and December 2013. Sociodemographic variables, related to the NH and to health conditions were analyzed. A descriptive analysis and bivariate analysis (by the Chi-square test, the Fisher‘s exact test or the linear Chi-square test) were performed, as well as multivariate analysis (logistic regression). The sample consisted of 127 elderly. The prevalence of negative self-perceived health was 63.19% (CI 95%: 55.07-70.63), and was associated with weight loss (PR: 1.54; CI 95%: 1.19-1.99), rheumatic disease (PR: 1.46; CI 95%: 1.05-2.01) and not-for-profit NH (PR: 1.37; CI 95%: 1.03-1.83), adjusted by sex. It was observed that more than half of the elderly perceived their health as negative, and poor self-perceived health was associated with weight loss, rheumatic disease and type of institution. It is important to develop health promotion actions in NH, such as those based on nutrition and physical therapy that target these health problems, in order to improve the quality of life of the institutionalized elderly.
