Abstract:

Quilombo communities live in condition of social vulnerability, even more than a century after the abolition of slavery, especially in relation to health care. This study investigated the self-rated health (SRH) in quilombo communities in northern Minas Gerais, Brazil, and the factors associated with negative SRH. This is a household survey with a representative sample of quilombo communities in the region studied. We used validated instruments to collect data on the SRH, socioeconomic and demographic conditions, lifestyle, and self-reported morbidity. After bivariate analysis was conducted hierarchical logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of negative SRH was 46.0%. After statistical analysis, the following variables were statistically associated with a negative APS: age and education, as distal variables and hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, depression and back problems as proximal variables. SRH was associated with demographic and socioeconomic dimensions and, especially, with self-reported morbidity. The concept of health for the studied communities seems to be closely linked to the absence of diseases, especially chronic diseases.
