Abstract:

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of severe food insecurity (SFI) for the Brazilian municipalities in 2013.
Method: A logistic regression model was used to predict SFI. To construct the model we used the National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) 2013. SFI was measured using the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA). The final model was applied to the Census 2010, predicting the municipal prevalence.
Results: The largest prevalence values were concentrated in the North and Northeast of Brazil, which also showed the highest municipality prevalence disparities. The lowest municipal prevalence value of SFI was in Rio Grande do Sul (0.70%) and the largest in Maranhão (18.58%), that was also the State with the largest intrastate disparities in the prevalence of SFI. The higher prevalences of SFI was in the Northern and Northeast and lower in the South. Acre had 100% of their municipalities presenting a very high prevalence of SFI (between 5.92 and 18.59%). By contrast in the State of São Paulo, 59.1% of the municipalities have low prevalence of SFI (up 2.02%).
Conclusions: The prevalence of municipal SFI was higher in the Brazil’s Northern and Northeast and there were strong within region and states disparities. These estimated prevalence values could help improve the targeting of policies to combat food insecurity in Brazil.
